If you have not already done so, install the Vehicle Gateway (VG).
See Vehicle Gateway (VG) Installation Guides by Cable to review the installation guide that corresponds with your vehicle’s VG diagnostics cable. Pause the VG installation when you reach the step related to plugging in accessory devices and continue with the instructions.
-
Choose an installation location to mount the Privacy Button:
-
Select a flat, non-porous surface such as rigid plastic, glass, or metal. Avoid fabric surfaces, as they do not provide a secure mounting base.
-
Ensure the Privacy Button is not installed over airbags or other critical safety features. Additionally, verify that cable routing will not interfere with these components.
-
Consider the proximity to the VG. The Privacy Button cable is ~7.5 feet (2.3 meters) long, so choose a location that allows for clean and unobstructed cable routing to the gateway.
-
-
Clean the mounting surface.
Wipe the install surface with a dry, lint-free cloth to remove any dust and other contaminants.
-
Mount the device.
-
Remove the red liner on the VHB adhesive by using the pull tab.
-
Firmly press the device into the intended install location for at least 30 seconds. Make sure adhesive is compressed evenly across the device.
-
-
Route the Privacy Button cable to the VG.
Tuck the cable under the windshield's glass seal, or tuck it into the seal along the A pillar, making sure the placement does not interfere with any vehicle safety systems, such as airbags.
For optimal performance, avoid wrapping the cable around the Vehicle Gateway or crossing it over the diagnostics cable. Instead, coil any excess cable into a loose loop and secure it with zip ties. Be careful not to bend or twist the cable during this process.
-
Connect the Privacy Button to the VG.
If you have already installed other accessories with the same Y cable (for example, a Panic Button), connect the male end of the Privacy Button connector to the female connector on the Panic Button Y cable. Otherwise, connect the male end of the Privacy Button directly to the VG. Avoid placing stress on the connector where it attaches to the Privacy Button.
For more information about auxiliary inputs for the VG, see Connect Auxiliary Inputs to the VG54 and VG55.
-
On the Samsara dashboard, configure the Privacy Button:
You can configure the Aux Input Type for the Privacy Button on a single gateway through the dashboard, or configure multiple gateways at once using a CSV file. For bulk updates, see Edit Gateways in Bulk.
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
Select the vehicle where you installed the Privacy Button and open the vehicle settings.
-
Under Aux Input Type for Input Number 2, select Privacy Button.
-
Save your changes.
-
-
If necessary, return to the Vehicle Gateway Installation Instructions.
-
After you install a Privacy Button, ensure drivers are familiar with the button’s location and operation.
It is recommended to conduct periodic reviews to verify the button remains in a practical position and hasn’t been obstructed or forgotten over time.
