Bluetooth Locations provide approximate location tracking for asset gateways using Bluetooth signals instead of GPS or cellular check-ins. When operating on battery power, asset gateways can use Bluetooth location tracking to report location more frequently while conserving power.
Bluetooth advertisements can be detected by nearby compatible powered gateways or mobile devices running a Samsara App with Bluetooth and location services enabled. Update frequency depends on detection conditions, including the presence and proximity of these detection sources.
Bluetooth Location behavior varies by asset gateway model:
-
AG51: Broadcasts a Bluetooth signal every 10 seconds when unpowered. Bluetooth Locations are configurable in the dashboard.
-
AG52 and AG53: Automatically broadcast a Bluetooth signal every 10 seconds when motion is detected and the device is not connected to external power. No configuration is required.
Note
Because Bluetooth-based locations are approximate and have a larger accuracy radius than GPS, geofence performance may be impacted by location drift.
By default, Bluetooth Locations are enabled for all AG51 devices in new organizations or when activating the first AG51 in an organization. For existing organizations, the setting is disabled unless manually configured.
To adjust Bluetooth Location settings or choose which AG51s the configuration should apply to, follow the workflow below:
-
Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
From the Devices settings, select Configuration > Gateways.
-
In the Asset Gateways settings, modify your Bluetooth Locations settings. When enabled, you can apply the settings to all AG51 devices, or specify tags or devices to which the settings should apply (Specific tags, Specific devices, All devices).
-
Save the changes to apply the settings.
Changes apply after the device’s next scheduled check-in.
-
Track your AG51 in the Samsara dashboard.
