Asset Gateways (AGs) provide regular location data based on the default or customized device check-in schedule. However, if you need more frequent location data, for example for theft recovery or to track a high value asset, you can enable Find My Asset to temporarily increase the frequency of gateway check-ins.
The default check-in settings vary by the AG type:
-
AG51 unpowered AG: defined by the Wake on Motion and Check-in Schedule settings.
-
AG52 and AG53 powered AG: provides continuous location data while connected to power and utilizes the Asset Gateway Power Loss Settings when the gateway loses power.
After you Enable Find My Asset, the Samsara dashboard will contact the gateway at the next scheduled check-in to update the check-in settings (customizable as either a onetime check-in or a new temporary check-in frequency). After the gateway is contacted, you can Use Find My Asset to View AG Location Data.
Note
Find My Asset may decrease battery life by 40%. For more details, see Battery Life Considerations.
Before you can use Find My Asset to provide more frequent location data, you must update the device settings. When you save the changes, the cloud will update the device settings at the next scheduled check-in. After the gateway receives the new settings, you can configure the AG to be more responsive.
To enable Find My Asset for one or more AGs, using the following workflow:
-
Select the Settings icon ( ) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.
-
Within Devices settings, select Configuration.
-
Apply the setting to one or more tags, specific devices, or all devices.
-
Save to confirm the settings.
-
To view an asset's location, see Use Find My Asset to View AG Location Data.
After you Enable Find My Asset and the gateway has successfully received the update, use the following workflow to utilize Find My Asset to temporarily request more frequent check-ins:
-
From the Samsara dashboard, navigate to Overview ( ) > Assets.
-
Locate the asset from the relevant asset list.
-
Click the asset Name to view the asset details.
-
Review the check-in details for last check-in and next check-in.
Note
The next check-in time is an estimate and is subject to other factors. For example, if Wake on Motion is enabled and the gateway connects to the Samsara cloud as a result of motion, the next check-in will occur sooner than described. Similarly, if you physically force a check-in, the forecasted check-in time can differ from the actual check-in time.
-
Click Find My Asset to initiate device check-in.
-
Select a one time check-in or customize the check-in frequency and duration:
-
Check in one time: Request the device location as a onetime, immediate event. If this option is not available, first Enable Find My Asset.
-
Create a custom check-in frequency and duration:
-
Frequency: Select how often the AG will report the device location (5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour). A higher frequency will deplete the battery at a faster rate.
-
Duration: Select the total number of hours to run the check-in at the selected frequency (4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours).
-
-
-
Submit to confirm the check-in settings.
-
Review your selection and Confirm to apply the changes.
-
To monitor the check-in status, return to the device details.
This status banner will automatically expire in 1 hour.
-
To start a new Find My Asset session, click close ( X ) to dismiss the status.
-
To change a custom frequency, click Modify on the gateway status. To cancel the custom frequency, click End and confirm the cancellation.
The Samsara dashboard will report the device status in a banner on the asset details. This banner expires after 1 hour.
Use the following table to learn more about the AG connection status:
Connection Status |
Definition |
---|---|
Contacting gateway |
The check-in request has been received and the Samsara cloud is attempting to contact the gateway. |
Gateway found |
The gateway has sent location information to the Samsara cloud. If you set a custom frequency, the dashboard displays the next scheduled check-in attempt. This Find My Asset status expires one hour after the last Find My Asset check-in. |
Location not found |
The gateway has been contacted but has not reported location data. Samsara will reattempt connection for up to 75 minutes. To review progress of the attempt, review the asset details (Overview ( ) > select asset). |
Could not contact gateway |
The gateway did not respond to the request. To troubleshoot the issue, reference the troubleshooting guide for your gateway model: |
The estimated battery life provided in the gateway datasheet (AG51 datasheet, AG52 datasheet, AG53 datasheet) represents battery longevity based on two check-ins a day and under normal environmental conditions, such as temperate weather, good GPS, and good cellular connection. To review installation recommendations, reference the installation instructions (AG51 installation, AG52/AG53 installation).
Battery longevity can be impacted by any of the following factors:
-
Low temperatures
-
Poor GPS availability
-
Poor cellular network coverage
-
Enabling additional features that provide more frequent check-ins, such as Find My Asset or Wake on Motion and Check-in Schedule for the AG51. For more information about device settings, see Asset Gateway (AG) Device Settings.
