Before requesting a video for retrieval, review the following resources to learn more about the different video types and retrieval guidelines.
If video is available, the video format will have one of the following resolution types:
-
High Resolution Video (HRV): Highest video resolution available (1 minute max duration for each retrieval). Includes audio if enabled.
Note
For Third-Party Camera installations, you can request HRV up to 1 minute in length; however, Secondary Extended Video (SEV) is not available for this installation type.
-
Hyperlapse video: High resolution video that can help you to quickly review the footage to identify important events. For more information about hyperlapse video format availability, see Hyperlapse Videos.
-
Secondary Extended Video (SEV): Lower resolution video with the most efficient processing time.
Longer segments and higher resolution video require more time to process and download. The following table summarizes the default resolution setting based on the length of your video retrieval:
Video Length |
Video Type (Default) |
---|---|
<1m |
HRV |
1m-10m |
Secondary Stream (SEV) |
>10m |

If available, trip videos must be retrieved using cellular service or Wi-Fi. Video retrieval is subject to the following conditions:
-
Video retrieval is possible only after a trip is completed. Videos from in-progress trips cannot be retrieved.
A trip is defined as traveling from a starting point to a stop or destination. By default, a trip begins when your vehicle achieves a speed of at least 5 mph and ends when the vehicle speed remains below 5 mph / 8 km/h for 5 minutes or when your vehicle crosses a state or national border.
-
By default, Samsara AI Dash Cams continue to record for an additional 10 minutes after movement is detected. To configure your dash cam settings or to enable Parking Mode to record a longer duration, see Dash Cam Settings Overview.
-
Samsara Multi-Cams, by default, continue recording for an additional 30 minutes after a trip ends. For configuration details, see Samsara Multi-Camera Systems.
-
Samsara does not support the extraction of license plate information from dash cam videos and does not provide tools for image enhancement.
-
Both the dash cam and the Vehicle Gateway (VG) must be online and connected for video retrieval to succeed.
-
When Dash Cam Storage Capacity is reached, older videos are overwritten to make space for new recordings. After they are overwritten, these older videos cannot be retrieved.
Note
The camera model and selected optional settings can impact video storage capacity. To view or modify your settings, see Dash Cam Settings Overview).
