The Samsara dashboard supports the remote retrieval of video clips from all generations of dash cams and multi-cams. To track and coach an undetected crash as a safety event, you can also use video retrieval to Manually Generate a Crash Event to surface the event for coaching in the Safety Inbox.
For options to retrieve your stored dash cam footage in the event of a vehicle accident or Vehicle Gateway (VG) theft, see Video Retrieval Before Moving a Dash Cam to a New Vehicle.
To remotely retrieve footage from a specific vehicle:
-
Verify video is available for retrieval (see Video Types and Retrieval Conditions).
-
Select Request Video to access your camera footage from any of the following dashboard locations:
-
Video Library: In your Samsara dashboard, navigate to Safety > Video Library
-
Proximity Search: In your Samsara dashboard, navigate to Overview > Proximity
-
To request videos by trip, see Trip Timeline Images and Videos.
-
-
If requesting a video from the Video Library, select the vehicle from the menu and the date of the retrieval.
Availability of video for retrieval is dependent on the camera configuration and Dash Cam Storage Capacity. If the video is available, the date displays as white and the calendar displays the
Earliest Footage
retrieval date. -
Locate the segment you want to retrieve. For detailed information about locating a segment, see Incident Review for Video Retrieval.
-
Select Retrieve Video.
Select a 1 minute segment to display more information about that segment, including a map of where the vehicle was traveling, the location, and the assigned driver (if available).
Samsara sends the request to the camera, which returns the video when it is next online. The time it takes for a video retrieval can vary. For example, if both the camera and the vehicle gateway are connected, you may be able to retrieve video immediately.
-
To view the status of your video retrieval request, navigate to Video Library Requests and select the date range for the video. Review the Progress for the video retrieval request:
-
Connecting: The request is in the retrieval queue on the device
-
Uploading: The dash cam has created the video and is uploading the file to the cloud
-
Processing: Samsara has received the video and is processing the file
-
Video Ready: Retrieval is complete and the video is ready for review.
-
Vehicle Offline: The device is offline. Samsara will retry the request when the device is next online
-
Upload Failed: Processing has failed due to corrupt files
-
-
After the video request displays Video Ready, select Play Video.
-
To manually create a crash event from a video retrieval to coach from the Safety Inbox, see Manually Generate a Crash Event.
To enhance incident investigation, you can review location data, a speed graph, and available footage on a single interface before you request a video retrieval.
Use the preceding image and the list below to navigate the Vehicle Map features:
|
Description |
---|---|
Point of Interest: Road-facing and inward-facing trip images and other trip data. For more information, see Point of Interest. |
|
Speed Graph: Speed trendlines during the selected trip. Indicates instances of slow movement, harsh acceleration, deceleration or speeding. For more details on navigating the speed graph, see Speed Graph. |
|
Vehicle Map: Historical asset location. Places the map as a central asset of the page to help correlate location to available footage. Shows the vehicle’s historical location in light blue. Additional map layers are available in the map options ( ), including default, terrain, satellite, geofence, and traffic bases. |
|
Footage Timeline: Video Timeline for the vehicle. |
|
View the Point of Interest side panel to gain valuable insights into your driver's trips. If no time period is selected, you see the latest still image, location, and the driver associated with that trip (if applicable). After selecting a retrieval period, the panel displays the closest still image to location A (the starting point), along with locations A and B, marking where the selected footage begins and ends. The assigned driver for the trip (if applicable) will also be shown. By default, trip images are uploaded at the start and end of every trip. If enabled, the Samsara Dash Cam also uploads inward-facing images and periodic trip images to document additional trip progress. To explore more thoroughly, you can expand all the available trip stills by selecting the full-screen icon at the bottom-right corner of the still images, giving you a more detailed view. |
To view speeding history, you can toggle the speed graph open and closed from the right side toggle. This graph represents instances of overspeeding (any speed over the speed limit) with a red bar at the bottom of the speed graph. Driver Speeding and Speed Limits
When you hover over the graph, you can view additional details on the speed, speed limit and any relevant overspeeding. You can also zoom into the speed graph and adjust both the map and the available footage timeline to your desired segment. After you select a period for retrieval, the chart highlights the segment in the color of the respective video retrieval type.
Use the footage timeline to easily navigate and explore your video footage. Hovering over the timeline will display a thumbnail preview of the video. The availability of footage for retrieval depends on several factors, such as whether the dash cam was recording and the dash cam’s storage capacity. For detailed conditions, see Video Types and Retrieval Conditions).
To highlight existing video retrievals, the timeline shows colored dots below it. Hovering over a dot will display a thumbnail preview of the video, and you can click Open for a full video review:
-
Green dot: Indicates a completed video retrieval request.
-
Red dot: Signifies a safety event video.
The type of video available for retrieval is indicated by the appearance of the bar:
|
Solid bar: Indicates that high resolution, hyperlapse, and SEV format videos are all available. |
|
|
Striped bar: Indicates that only SEV format footage is available. |
|
|
No bar: Indicates that the footage is not available, either because it was not recorded or it is no longer available. |
When you click and drag the sliders, you can zoom in on the timeline to refine your view and adjust the map and speed graph to focus on the specific segment you need.
If footage is available for retrieval, choose the type of video retrieval from the dropdown menu, and an info tooltip will provide details about each retrieval type. After you select a retrieval period, use the trimmer to extend or shorten the segment, or drag the trimmer to reposition it on the timeline. The map, speed graph, and preview images will all automatically update as you move the trimmer, helping you stay aligned with your specific requirements.
After you select a period for retrieval, locations A-B are highlighted and the length of the trip is color-coded in the color of the video retrieval type:

my retrieval only goes back 10 days and on others longer
One additional note for the 'Video Retrieval Considerations and Limitations' list:
Manually retrieved videos do not currently provide information regarding the position of the accelerator pedal, or whether the brake pedal was depressed. This information is provided, however, in videos generated by the harsh event algorithm, so Samsara does have access to those data. It would be valuable to provide that information in manually retrieved videos to give additional context to each video. To take it a step further, the information provided in videos generated by the harsh event algorithm currently only indicate whether the brake pedal is 'on' or 'off'... there is no granularity similar to the information provided for the accelerator pedal, which shows how far the pedal is depressed on a 0% - 100% scale. It would be helpful to know if the driver, for instance, is slamming the brake pedal to the floor or just barely pressing it.
