ACC-VG-ACCR for VG54 and VG55
The Duckbill Contactless CAN Reader is a non-invasive hardware device that captures vehicle diagnostic data by passively listening to the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Instead of cutting, splicing, or plugging into connectors, the device clips securely over the CAN High and CAN Low twisted pair wires to read signals safely and reliably. This approach enables faster installations, avoids risks to vehicle warranties, and provides flexibility in accessing data from additional CAN networks.
This guide walks through the high-level steps for installing a contactless CAN Reader on supported vehicle types. It is designed to assist installers in finding and accessing the most suitable CAN wiring harnesses using non-invasive, warranty-safe contactless methods.

-
Install the vehicle gateway.
Use the Cable Selection Tool to identify the best cable to power the Vehicle Gateway.
Diagnostic cables are preferred, but power-only cables are acceptable if recommended for the make, model, and year (MMY). Verify the installation by confirming the Vehicle Gateway is associated with the correct organization ID in the Samsara dashboard.
-
Prepare the vehicle.
Turn off the ignition and remove the key. Allow the CAN bus to enter sleep mode (typically 5–10 minutes) or follow the manufacturer’s power-down procedure.
-
Locate a suitable CAN access point.
Identify an accessible wiring harness where the CAN bus can be read non-invasively. Common locations include under the dashboard, behind the instrument cluster, or at the body control module (BCM). Use trim removal tools to expose wiring as needed. For more information, see Example Access Points for CAN Bus by Vehicle.
For first-time installations, test multiple access points if required to ensure clean, stable signal capture.
-
Identify CAN High and CAN low wires.
Locate the twisted pair of wires representing CAN High and CAN Low. These typically feature complementary color codes (for example, white-blue, yellow-green, or orange-brown).
Verify signal levels using a multimeter if necessary: 0V idle, ~2.5V active, with approximately 1V differential between the pair.
Note
Color codes may vary between OEMs, especially for electric or specialty vehicles. Refer to the OEM’s service manual for accurate wire identification.
-
Install the contactless CAN reader.
Clip the reader securely over the identified twisted pair. Ensure firm contact and stable alignment of the reader over the wire insulation.
-
Validate the installation.
Finding a pair of twisted CAN wires does not always guarantee successful data capture. Validate signal quality before finalizing installation.
-
Power on the vehicle and verify that the Vehicle Gateway LED turns green, indicating data flow.
-
Check the Samsara dashboard to confirm diagnostic signals are populating as expected.
-
-
Finalize the installation.
-
Take a clear photo of the CAN tap location for documentation.
-
Reinstall any removed trim or panels, and log installation details in the Samsara dashboard or internal tracker.
