When a vehicle moves without a driver logged in, Samsara automatically assigns the driving time to the next driver who connects to the vehicle’s gateway. This ensures compliance with FMCSA ELD rules, which prevent edits to automatically recorded drive time. However, these assignments can sometimes be incorrect, causing inaccurate hours-of-service (HOS) data and operational issues. To help you catch and correct these issues in downstream systems, Samsara provides a standardized remark-only edit called Misattributed Duty Status Time, which you can retrieve using the HOS Logs API.
-
Add a remark-only edit to the misattributed segment.
An admin must annotate the driving log with the standardized remark:
Misattributed Duty Status Time.Note
This does not remove or change the drive time—it simply adds context for downstream reconciliation.
-
Ask the driver to accept the remark in the Samsara Driver App.
The edit must be approved by the driver before it becomes visible through the API.
Tip
If the remark is not appearing in the API results, confirm the driver has accepted it in their app.
-
Call the
GET /fleet/hos_logsAPI endpoint. Use the HOS Logs API withstartTimeandendTimeparameters to pull logs across a desired date range. This returns a list of duty status segments, including remarks added by both admins and drivers.
Note
Manual remarks added by drivers in the Samsara Driver App are included in the Get HOS Logs API response.
-
Filter the response for remarks matching
Misattributed Duty Status Time. Search the returned logs for duty status segments that include the standardized remark. -
Reconcile flagged segments in your internal systems. Use the flagged segments to resolve HOS reporting issues, reattribute drive time, or adjust related payroll, TMS, or compliance workflows.
-
Always use the exact phrase
Misattributed Duty Status Timewhen annotating misattributed logs. -
Automate API queries on a regular schedule to catch updates as they’re approved.
-
Confirm driver approvals promptly to ensure logs are queryable.
-
Document your system’s handling of flagged segments to support audits or internal reviews.
