The Privacy Button is an in-vehicle button that allows drivers to temporarily stop sending real-time GPS vehicle location to the Samsara cloud. When the driver presses the button, the Vehicle Gateway stops sharing live location coordinates with the cloud, so the dashboard no longer shows current vehicle position.
Note
This behavior is specific to GPS location reporting. It does not enable or change dash cam Privacy Mode or other settings that control in-cab or road-facing recording; those features are managed separately.
While live GPS location sharing is paused, the Samsara dashboard shows a gray dot at the last reported vehicle location. In the vehicle details page, a privacy icon and status also indicate that the vehicle is not sharing live GPS location.
A trip segment automatically ends after five minutes of inactivity. If a driver presses the Privacy Button and does not re-enable GPS location tracking within five minutes, the current trip segment ends. If location tracking is disabled before a trip begins, that trip segment will not appear in reports at all.
Equipment and activity reports do not include auxiliary or non-private details about Privacy Button usage. However, you can view privacy-related activity in the Privacy Sessions Report.
The Privacy Button is available in two models depending on your Vehicle Gateway version. For more information on specifications, see the Privacy Button datasheet.
