The Vehicle Gateway (VG) Wi-Fi hotspot provides internet access so you can use the Samsara Driver App to manage your daily work tasks. A VG license typically includes 500 MB/month of Wi-Fi data; the amount depends on your license. After the data limit is reached, functionality required for ELD compliance will remain operational but functionality of other applications may be degraded.
If you view training videos or review safety event videos within the Samsara Driver App, it does not count against the monthly Wi-Fi data limit.
Your tablet or phone does not need its own cellular service to use the Samsara Driver App. You can connect over Wi-Fi to the VG hotspot in the vehicle for connectivity.
To connect to your wireless hotspot, perform the following workflow:
-
Before you connect to the Wi-Fi, obtain your hotspot name and password from your Fleet Administrator.
The hotspot name (SSID) may use a company-specific label, and the hotspot password is different from your Samsara Driver App or fleet account password. If you are unsure of the hotspot name or password, contact your Fleet Administrator.
-
Ensure the Wi-Fi on your device is enabled and select the hotspot name.
Open your device Settings and enable Wi-Fi. The hotspot typically displays only when the VG is powered, such as when the vehicle is powered on or the engine is running. From the list of networks, select the hotspot name. If it does not display, use your device Wi-Fi settings to add the network manually by entering the hotspot name (SSID) exactly as provided.
-
Enter the hotspot password.
Enter the hotspot password exactly as given. Do not use your Samsara Driver App credentials or fleet ID password. You can optionally enable auto-connect so your device reconnects to this hotspot in the future.
-
Connect or join the network.
Confirm that the network displays as connected in your device Wi-Fi settings, then return to the Samsara Driver App. If the network still does not display or will not connect, try moving the vehicle slightly or restarting your device, then check the Wi-Fi list again.
