Heavy-duty vehicles manufactured for model year 2018 and later frequently include a 14-pin RP1226 diagnostic port. When available, this port should be used for Vehicle Gateway (VG) installation in place of the J1939 interface.
The RP1226 port is a standardized diagnostic interface that enables compatibility with third-party telematics devices. It is commonly installed in vehicles manufactured by Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner, Volvo, and MACK.
Use of the RP1226 port is recommended whenever it is present. The following requirements support a successful and compliant installation:
-
Warranty considerations: Some manufacturers require the RP1226 port to be used for aftermarket telematics. Failing to use this port when available may affect warranty coverage.
-
Cable compatibility: The VG must be connected using CBL-VG-CRP1226, CBL-VG-B1226, or CBL-VG-C1226, which are designed for use with RP1226 ports.
To determine the correct cable for a specific installation, refer to Installation Guide by Cable.
-
Port availability: The port may not be immediately visible, even if installed. Consult the vehicle’s specifications or perform a direct inspection to verify its location.
In many 2023 MACK trucks, the RP1226 connector is present but concealed behind interior trim.
The connector has a rectangular body with a 14-pin configuration and is typically routed behind molded panels. Refer to the images below to familiarize yourself with its appearance before beginning the removal process.

To access the RP1226 connector:
-
Remove the passenger-side kick panel to access the lower dashboard area.
-
Inspect the space behind the glove compartment, near the HVAC ductwork.
The RP1226 connector is typically bundled with other diagnostic wiring and may be secured with a zip tie or enclosed in a protective sleeve.
-
Reach upward behind the dash cavity and gently pull down the cable harness until the connector becomes accessible.
-
Detach the interior trim brace if additional clearance is required.
