HOS Log Edits
How can I edit automatic drive time (ELD)?
In general automatically recorded drive time cannot be edited.
If you need to update a Driving (ELD) status misattribution due to user error, such as when a driver forgets to sign out of the ELD and a mechanic moves the vehicle, you can annotate the driver log with Ignore Driving Segment. This will readjust the driver’s remaining hours, clear related HOS violations (if applicable) and update the HOS clocks on the Samsara Driver App with the ignored driving time to help with the admin and driver’s workflow.
From the Driver HOS page, select the segments that you want to modify, click Manage (the button displayed next to automatically recorded driving segments), select Ignore Driving, add a remark, and select the correct duty status to recalculate the driver's HOS clocks accordingly. After you save your changes, the driver must accept or reject the edits in the Samsara Driver App.
How can I reassign unassigned drive time to another driver?
In the event that you need to edit an unassigned segment or if the segment has been incorrectly assigned and accepted by a driver, you can unassign the segment to return it to the Unassigned HOS Report where it can then be assigned to the correct driver.
Find the driving segment, click the Unassign button, review the driver's duty status selection and then save any changes you need to make. Doing so moves the unassigned driving segment to the Unassigned HOS Report where it can be re-assigned and annotated.
Can I or my driver call Samsara Support to have my Drive time edited due to a user error or technical issues?
Samsara Support is not allowed to queue edits to a driver's HOS logs per the FMCSA ELD mandate.

Why is my driver’s HOS log On Duty (not driving) when the driver completed their shift?
If a driver is listed as On Duty after completing their shift, it's possible that the driver did not change status to Off Duty in the Samsara Driver App. To correct this issue, navigate to the Activity Summary Report and visit the Driver tab. On the driver's Activity Report, select a date range that includes the extended On Duty status’s start time and note the duration of the status and the next duty status selection date.
Logged into the App on January 18 at 4:31 PM
Selected the On Duty status on January 18 at 4:32 PM
Logged out of the App on January 22 at 3:58 PM
The On Duty status remained selected for 95 hours and 26 minutes.
Then, use the Ignore Driving feature on the driver's HOS logs to propose corrections to the misattributed drive time. From the Driver HOS page, select the segments that you want to modify, click Remark (the button displayed next to automatically recorded driving segments), select Ignore Driving, add a remark, and select the correct duty status to recalculate the driver's HOS clocks accordingly. After you save your changes, the driver must accept or reject the edits in the Samsara Driver App.
What should I do if a driver forgets to sign out and someone else drives the vehicle?
Use the Ignore Driving feature on the driver's HOS logs to propose corrections to misattributed drive time.
How can I queue an edit to switch automatic drive time between team drivers (co-driver)?
For appropriate team driver scenarios with ELD driving events, you can propose swaps between the team drivers. Both drivers will need to have certified their logs to propose team driving swaps. After proposing an edit, both drivers must accept edits for the edit to go through. If one driver rejects the edit, the proposed edit will be canceled.
After both team driver logs are certified, locate the driving segment that needs to be swapped with the co-driver, select Remark/Swap, and on the Team Driver Swap tab select the driver to swap with. The segment will be swapped with the co-driver's segment at the given time, and a remark will be added indicating "Team driver swap". Drivers must accept or reject the edit in the Samsara Driver App.
My fleet has non-ELD vehicles. Am I able to edit the Drive time for my non-ELD vehicles?
You can configure vehicles that are not subject to the ELD mandate in our system as “Unregulated”, which will remove the automatic duty status feature required in ELDs. For these unregulated vehicles, drivers may manually put themselves into the Drive duty status, which may be edited at a later time.
Fleets who are not required to use ELD for their entire fleet may call into Support to disable the Auto-duty feature. Drivers will need to change duty statuses in the Driver app manually. Drive time for these segments will be editable.
See ELD Exempt Drivers.
I would like to reassign driving time to another driver to ensure logs are accurate, even if it was not a team driving scenario. Why don't you allow this?
The ELD mandate states that the name of the driver associated with the automatically recorded Drive event cannot be modified unless the segment was originally unassigned or if there was a team driving scenario.
According to the ELD mandate:
-
Automatic driving time may not otherwise be re-assigned and may never be cumulatively changed.
-
An ELD must not allow automatically recorded driving time to be shortened or the ELD username associated with an ELD record to be edited or reassigned, except under limited circumstances as defined in the ELD mandate.
HOS Violations
14-hour Shift Duty Limit HOS Violation - USA property ruleset
Disclaimer: US Violations as flagged in Samsara are not a function of an ELD. They will not and cannot be transferred to the FMCSA system in an Audit. These violations as flagged are strictly for Admin and Driver reference, and are also not shown in the Roadside Inspection screen in the Driver App.
Possible Causes:
The driver was on duty or driving (including a Yard Move) for more than 14 hours since the shift clock started.
If the driver is eligible for an exemption, such as Adverse Driving, the driver may have forgotten to claim it in the Driver App. The HOS log will show when the exemption was claimed. For this exemption to apply correctly, the driver will need to ensure it’s claimed within the Shift’s boundaries.
If the driver is using the Split Sleeper Provision, the longer segment (at least 7 hours) can only be achieved in the Sleeper Birth duty status, per FMCSA HOS Final Rule released in 2020.
The driver is utilizing the Split Sleeper Provision and the Split Sleeper toggle is turned off. In this scenario, the system will flag a hypothetical Shift Limit violation that counts the first split period and then retroactively removes it after the second Split is achieved correctly.
11-hour Shift Driving Limit HOS Violation - USA property ruleset
Disclaimer: US Violations as flagged in Samsara are not a function of an ELD. They will not and cannot be transferred to the FMCSA system in an Audit. These violations as flagged are strictly for Admin and Driver reference, and are also not shown in the Roadside Inspection screen in the Driver App.
Possible causes:
- The driver had been Driving for more than 11 hours since the Shift clock started.
- If the driver is using the Split Sleeper Provision, the longer segment (at least 7 hours) can only be achieved in the Sleeper Birth duty status, per FMCSA HOS Final Rule released in 2020. If a driver tries to meet the longer segment of the Split Sleeper in “Off Duty” and exceeds the Shift Driving limit, then an HOS violation will be flagged.
- If the driver is eligible for an exemption, such as Adverse Driving, the driver may have forgotten to claim it in the Driver App. The HOS log will show when the exemption was claimed. For this exemption to apply correctly, the driver will need to ensure it’s claimed within the Shift’s boundaries.
Example - Day 1
Example - Day 2
Missed Rest Break (8 hours) HOS violation - USA property ruleset
Disclaimer: US Violations as flagged in Samsara are not a function of an ELD. They will not and cannot be transferred to the FMCSA system in an Audit. These violations as flagged are strictly for Admin and Driver reference, and are also not shown in the Roadside Inspection screen in the Driver App.
Possible causes:
- Eligible off duty/on-duty/sleeper birth/yard move segments are less than 30 minutes.
- The eligible segments need to be uninterrupted for a minimum of 30 minutes.
- If the driver is eligible for an exemption, such as the 150 Air Mile Short Haul exemption, the driver may have forgotten to claim it in the Samsara Driver App or it may have been disabled due to ineligibility. The HOS log will show when the exemption was claimed.
Daily Off-Duty 2-Hour Shift Non-Reset HOS violation - Canada South ruleset
Possible causes:
The HOS log’s Day boundaries (for example, Midnight to Midnight or Noon to Noon) depending on the driver’s profile settings, must have at least 2 hours Off duty that do not for the 8-hour consecutive off duty, which count towards a Shift Reset.
The minimum off-duty time must consist of > or = 30-minute segments each.

Daily Off-Duty 10-Hour Shift Reset HOS violation - Canada South ruleset
Possible causes:
The HOS log’s Day boundaries (for example, Midnight to Midnight or Noon to Noon) depending on the driver’s profile settings, must have at least 10 hours Off duty that may include the 8-hour consecutive off duty, which count towards a Shift Reset.
The minimum off-duty time must consist of > or = 30 minutes segments each
Refer to the Canada Vehicle Driver Hours of Service Regulations: Daily Off-Duty Time requirement.

Split Sleeper
How do I enable Split Sleeper berth provision on a driver’s profile?
US
- US drivers may enable the Split Sleeper Toggle in the Driver App, if they wish to pause the HOS shift clock when the first eligible period is met.
- In the US, Samsara does not assume that a driver is completing Split Sleeper until after the second period has successfully been taken unless the driver enabled the Split Sleeper Toggle in the Driver App.
Canada HOS rulesets:
- Samsara will assume that a driver will complete split-sleeper after the first qualifying sleeper berth period, and retroactively show violations if this is not achieved.
How to disable Sleeper Berth status on a driver’s profile?
Samsara does not currently support disabling Sleeper Berth status on a driver's profile. You may raise this request as feedback or a feature request.
What is the Split Sleeper Toggle and how does it work?
The Split Sleeper Toggle is a Samsara Driver App Setting that allows drivers operating under US Federal Rulesets to exclude the first Split Sleeper rest period from the shift clock calculations.
When the toggle is turned off, the driver clocks will be pessimistic, which means the shift clock will continue counting down until the second Splt Sleeper break is achieved and may flag shift limit violations until the complete Split Sleeper is achieved then retroactively remove the violations after the second split is achieved.
When the Split Sleeper Toggle is enabled, the shift pauses after the first eligible period until your status changes to On Duty. Samsara displays a note in the HOS log; however, Samsara recommends that you manually add a remark to the log to help during a roadside inspection to clarify the split sleeper scenario.
