Samsara’s License Plate Detection operates strictly as a click-to-run manual feature and can only be used on footage relating to safety incidents. Detected plate reads are retained for only three days – they are not kept as a long-term vehicle registry. This feature is not an automated license plate reader for continuous roadside monitoring, not a substitute for dedicated ALPR systems, and not intended for automated enforcement programs. To ensure transparency and as part of our commitment to privacy and trust, we maintain the following privacy and security standards relating to the maintenance and development of this feature:
Authorized Use & Purpose: This feature is designed to assist safety teams in pulling readable plates from existing event video after a safety event (e.g., sideswipes, mirror strikes, hit-and-runs, or other collisions). By providing clearer reads from dash cam footage, the tool supports insurance filings, police reports, driver exoneration, and liability discussions without requiring users to manually scrub video frames. It is strictly scoped to on-demand, click-to-run manual use relating to safety events; it is not intended for use for surveillance purposes or as part of an automated enforcement program. Use of all Samsara products and features is subject to the Acceptable Use Policy set forth in our Terms of Service.
Data Retention & Destruction: Detected plate data is retained for three (3) days. Upon expiration of this retention window, the data is automatically deleted unless longer retention is required by law.
Access Controls & Training: Access to the tool is limited to authorized customer users managing safety incidents, and a select, restricted group of internal Samsara employees responsible for developing and maintaining the feature. All authorized Samsara employees undergo mandatory annual privacy, artificial intelligence, and data security training.
Security & Monitoring: Samsara prioritizes protecting customer data and has implemented a comprehensive security program designed to ensure compliance with industry standards. This includes annual independent security audits, risk assessments, and privacy impact assessments. Samsara also performs annual penetration testing and vulnerability scanning to detect and address security gaps. The company also maintains comprehensive logs of all activity and reviews access logs and access rights. In addition, anti-virus and host-based IDS/IPS are deployed on servers, with up-to-date definition libraries and the latest security patches installed. Samsara also maintains multiple ISO certifications relating to privacy, security, and AI Governance. Data Sharing Restrictions: Samsara will not sell, share, or otherwise disclose detected plate data except as provided in these Standards, as allowed by law,or as needed to provide and support the Products, as set forth in the Terms of Service. Accuracy & Error Correction: We utilize AI training and testing protocols to optimize detection accuracy. Because the tool is designed to assist post-incident investigations, all automated reads are presented alongside the source video for human review and verification, allowing users to independently confirm accuracy and correct any data errors before utilizing the information in claims or reports.
System Custodians: The implementation, maintenance, and compliance of this feature are jointly overseen by Samsara’s Safety Product & Engineering teams in conjunction with Safety Product Legal.
