Supported devices: AHD1, Samsara AI Multicam
When reviewing the External Camera Device Health Report for device status, use the following table to understand health definitions and recommended troubleshooting steps. The report calculates health based on device connectivity and recording uptime during recent trip activity.
Use the following table to review external camera health statuses, understand what each status means, and follow troubleshooting steps when issues require action.
|
Device Health Status |
Health Reason |
Description |
Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|---|
|
|
Healthy |
The device is not experiencing any health issues. |
No action required. |
|
|
Device has low uptime |
The device has been recording for less than 97% of the expected recording time. |
Check that the device is well connected and that the camera is properly installed. |
|
|
Device has low connectivity |
The device has been connected for less than 97% of trips total time. |
Check the device's connection and verify correct installation. |
|
|
Media inputs have low connectivity |
Media inputs connected to the device have uptime below 97%. (Samsara AI Multicam only) |
Ensure the camera is properly connected to the device. |
|
|
Media input is not connected |
The media input has not been reported as connected within the last 30 days. (Samsara AI Multicam only) |
None (status only visible in Samsara AI Multicam drop-down). |
|
|
Outward Camera Obstruction |
The outward-facing camera does not have a clear view of the road. Video quality and AI detection may be impacted. |
Remove obstruction and test dash cam positioning. |
|
|
Recording Time Required |
The dash cam cannot have health status calculated because in the last 30 days, the camera has not been in a recording situation. |
No action required. |
For Samsara AI Multicams, you can narrow down connection and power issues at the vehicle by matching the device LED to the table below. Use this together with the health definitions table above when the report shows Needs Attention.
Check the dash cam LED, then find the matching row in the table below. Perform the recommended action for that state.
|
LED State |
What It Means |
Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|
|
Solid green |
Device is powered and operating normally; connection to the Vehicle Gateway (VG) is good. |
No action required. If the External Camera Device Health report still shows Needs Attention, check the health reason (for example, low uptime, low connectivity, obstruction) and follow the recommended action in the table above. |
|
Solid red |
Device has a fault or is not communicating correctly with the VG. |
(1) Confirm the cable from the dash cam to the VG is fully seated and secure. (2) Confirm the VG has power and cellular connectivity; see Troubleshoot by VG LED State. (3) If the LED stays red, power off the VG for at least 15 minutes, then reconnect. |
|
Blinking amber/orange |
Device is booting, updating, or attempting to connect. |
Wait a few minutes. If it does not change to solid green, disconnect and reconnect the cable to the VG and confirm the VG is powered and online. |
|
Blinking blue |
Device is in setup or pairing mode, or connectivity is partial. |
Ensure the device is activated in the Samsara dashboard and the VG is connected to the cloud. If the LED does not turn solid green after a short drive, check VG power and cellular reception. |
|
No LED (off) |
Device is not receiving power from the VG. |
(1) Check the cable connection between the dash cam and the VG; reseat the connector firmly. (2) Confirm the VG is powered (check the VG LED and vehicle ignition/power). (3) Try a different USB port on the VG if available. |
Note
LED behavior and colors can vary by hardware revision. If your LED does not match the table or the issue continues after you follow the steps, see Report an Issue or contact Support with the exact LED pattern (solid or blinking, color) and the health status shown in the External Camera Device Health report.
When the report shows Needs Attention with a reason (for example, low uptime, low connectivity, media input not connected, or outward camera obstruction), use both:
-
The health definitions table above for the recommended action that matches the health reason.
-
The Samsara AI Multicam LED table when the device is a Samsara AI Multicam, to confirm power, boot, and VG connection at the vehicle.
After you take action, allow time for new trip activity so the report can recalculate health. If the status does not improve, contact Support and provide the health reason and the LED state you observed.
