The USB to Ethernet cable is a commercially available accessory that enables the Samsara Vehicle Gateway (VG) to transmit data to the Samsara Cloud using a wired Ethernet connection. This configuration is recommended for assets that operate in areas with limited or no cellular coverage, provided Ethernet connectivity is available. The Vehicle Gateway does not require any configuration to enable Ethernet connectivity. It begins transmitting data over ethernet automatically when the cable is connected and a network is available.
When determining how to send data, the Vehicle Gateway uses the following logic:
-
If Ethernet is available, the Vehicle Gateway uses it to transmit data, even if cellular connectivity is also available.
-
If Ethernet is not available but Wi-Fi is enabled and connected, the Vehicle Gateway uses the Wi-Fi network to transmit data.
-
If neither Ethernet nor Wi-Fi is available, the Vehicle Gateway transmits data over the cellular network.
-
This logic operates independently of Wi-Fi settings. Ethernet connectivity works regardless of whether the VG is configured as a hotspot, connected to Wi-Fi, or not using Wi-Fi at all.
The recommended USB to Ethernet cable model for use with the Samsara Vehicle Gateway is the Cable Matters Plug & Play USB to Ethernet Adapter with PXE and MAC Address Clone Support (Ethernet to USB 2.0 Adapter, Ethernet Adapter for Laptop), which supports 10/100 Mbps Ethernet networks.
