Group Coaching helps you recognize and coach drivers in a group setting using real fleet data. Instead of preparing slide decks or spreadsheets, you can generate a ready-to-use session that highlights positive recognition, defensive driving examples, safety scores, and areas for improvement. This feature is designed for supervisors and managers who run regular safety meetings, especially in industries where frontline supervisors double as driver coaches.
Unlike traditional 1:1 coaching, Group Coaching makes it easy to deliver engaging sessions with minimal preparation. The session wizard guides you through setup, then builds a structured presentation with insights tailored to your selected drivers.
Generated sessions are stored as presentations on the Group Coaching tab. Here you can view and access sessions you’ve created in the past. Each session is organized to balance recognition with improvement areas. The included elements are automatically tailored to the selected drivers and can include any of the following components:
-
Group Safety Score: View the group’s overall safety score and trend to measure progress at a glance.
-
Insights — Areas to Celebrate and Areas of Improvement: See where the group is excelling and where to focus attention.
-
Safest Drivers: Recognize the top five safest drivers; select to view the next five, up to 20 total.
-
Streaks and Milestones Leaderboards: Highlight longest streaks (for example, focus driving, HOS compliance, safe speed) and key milestones. Only configured/enabled streaks and milestones are included.
-
Biggest Score Improvements: Call out drivers with the largest safety score gains over the selected period.
-
Defensive Driving: Show real examples of proactive hazard avoidance. Events are selected using the Defensive context label.
-
Unsafe Behaviors: Identify risks such as mobile device use or following too closely, with suggested talk tracks to prompt discussion and commitment.
To use Group Coaching:
-
Users must be a Full Admin or have a custom role with permissions to view Coaching within the Safety permissions.
-
Users can only select drivers and tags they’re permitted to view.
Group Coaching presentations are generated using a session wizard. The setup ensures that the resulting content reflects the specific group of drivers and the selected time window. For best performance, limit sessions to fewer than 50 drivers and use a 7-day date range.
To generate a session:
-
From the Samsara dashboard, go to Safety (
) > Coaching.
-
Click Create Group Coaching.
-
Choose a date range and select applicable drivers and tags to represent who’s in the meeting.
Note
Vehicle tags and vehicle-based sessions are not supported.
Tip
Large time ranges or more than 50 drivers may cause the report to time out. For optimal performance, use a date range for the last 7 days and fewer than 50 drivers.
-
(Optional) Enable Video blurring to anonymize inward-facing video clips.
Blurring only applies within Group Coaching. It does not blur videos in the Safety Inbox or other features.
-
Click Submit to compile the presentation.
The wizard builds a structured coaching deck with insights, examples, and discussion prompts.
If needed you can share the URL of the Group Coaching session with other safety supervisors.
-
Return to the Group Coaching tab, as needed, to view sessions at a later date.
