Samsara EM-series sensors are ideal for monitoring food safety during transportation, warehouse conditions, and other applications that rely on environmental data to ensure quality or maintain compliance.
Warning
Samsara EM sensors are not intended to be used as a primary method of detecting fires or monitoring life threatening conditions.
The Samsara temperature monitors use thermistor-based temperature sensors to monitor the temperature without the need for periodic recalibration. After sampling the environment, the sensor delivers the new data to the Sensor Environment Report.
The table below summarizes the EM features by model:
|
EM Model |
Feature Description |
|---|---|
|
EM31 |
A wireless, waterproof, data logging temperature sensor. For a wider range of temperature applications, connect an ACC-EM-P1 accessory probe. The EM31 sensor uses a Sensylink CT7117 sensor which is factory calibrated and tested in a controlled environment. For more information, see the Certificate of Calibration which certifies each Samsara EM sensor has been calibrated to read temperature according to the specifications noted in the EM31 datasheet. |
|
EM21 and EM22 |
The EM21 and EM22 are wireless, waterproof, data logging environmental monitors with temperature and humidity sensors. The EM21 and EM22 sensors use a Silicon Labs 7013 module which is factory calibrated and tested in a controlled environment. For more information, see the Certificate of Calibration which certifies each Samsara EM sensor has been calibrated to read temperature and humidity according to the specifications noted in the EM21 and EM22 datasheet. |
To begin using your EMs, see the following topics:
Before you install the EM, activate it using the Samsara Fleet App.
Note
If you are replacing one EM with another, you can also Swap Environmental Monitors Using the Samsara Fleet App.
-
In the Samsara Fleet App, go to Install Devices and select Environmental Monitor.
-
Tap Identify sensor to scan the serial number of the EM.
-
Tap Verify install to confirm the sensor is working and connected.
-
Tap Add sensor details to provide details about the use of the sensor.
-
Proceed to Install an EM Sensor and then return to the fleet app to complete activation.
-
Tap Add installation details to document the install (photos, notes, installation method).
Samsara supports different models of Environmental Monitor (EM) sensors to ensure quality and maintain compliance for various applications that rely on environmental data, such as food safety during transportation. To install an EM Sensor, follow the instructions for your model.
To install an EM31 sensor, follow the detailed workflow below or for printable installation instructions, see the EM31 Install Guide.
To install an EM31 sensor, you will need:
-
Before you begin, Activate the EM.
-
Select the desired mounting location.
Observe the following considerations when choosing a mounting location:
-
Identify a mounting location within 100 feet of your gateway.
-
Place the device in a location with open airflow.
-
Avoid placing it near doors to prevent large temperature fluctuations.
-
Keep the rubber plug on the bottom of the device inserted when the temperature probe is not in use.
-
(Optional) If using a temperature probe (ACC-EM-P1, sold separately), choose a location with at least four inches of clearance below the device to allow for the probe cable connection.
-
-
Mount the device onto a clean, flat surface using the attached adhesive strips.
-
Secure the sensor using the provided screws.
-
If applicable, install the probe.
-
Remove the rubber plug at the bottom of the device.
-
Insert the connector with the grips facing forward.
-
Fasten the connector with the screws.
An
EXTexternal temperature reading will display on the screen.
Note
Both ambient temperature and probe temperature will be displayed in the Samsara dashboard
-
-
Verify that the sensor is reporting the temperature from the Sensor Environment Report on the Samsara dashboard. You can identify the sensor by device serial number or the name, if provided during activation.
-
If you opt to manually pin a sensor to a specific gateway instead of allowing data association with the nearest gateway, proceed to Pair a Samsara Sensor to a Vehicle or Asset Gateway.
To install an EM21 or EM22 sensor, follow the detailed workflow below or for printable installation instructions, see the EM21 Install Guide.
To install an EM21 or EM22 sensor, you will need:
-
Before you begin, Activate the EM.
-
Identify a mounting location within 100 feet of your gateway.
-
Secure the mounting plate of the sensor using the provided screws.
-
Secure the sensor cover to the mounting plate and fasten with the top screw.
-
Verify that the sensor is reporting the temperature from the Sensor Environment Report on the Samsara dashboard. You can identify the sensor by device serial number or the name, if provided during activation.
-
If you opt to manually pin a sensor to a specific gateway instead of allowing data association with the nearest gateway, proceed to Pair a Samsara Sensor to a Vehicle or Asset Gateway.
To manually pin sensor data to a specific Asset or Vehicle Gateway instead of allowing auto-detection of the nearest gateway, you can enforce sensor to gateway pairing. For more information, see Pair a Samsara Sensor to a Vehicle or Asset Gateway.
After you install an Environmental Monitor (EM21 or EM22), check live status in the Samsara dashboard and on the device, use sensor reports for history and trends, and set up alerts and scheduled report delivery for offline or low-signal events and routine health and environment review.
For current readings and connection quality, use the following:
-
On the Fleet Overview map and the asset details page, review real-time sensor data, signal strength, and health alerts.
-
On EM21 and EM22 models, press and hold the display button to show signal bars on the device screen. Aim for at least three bars.
For historical readings, health status, and environmental trends, view the Sensor Environment Report, the Sensor Health report, and the Sensor Environment report in the Samsara dashboard. Use these reports when you need more detail than live views provide or when you compare performance across assets or time ranges.
For notice outside the dashboard and for recurring review:
-
Configure email and SMS alerts for device offline and low-signal conditions so your team is notified when a sensor drops off or signal degrades.
-
Schedule the Device Health > Sensors and Environment > Sensor reports for recurring delivery and review them on a routine basis to spot data gaps or declining signal quality.
If you need to troubleshoot your Environmental Monitor sensor, refer to the following steps for your observed behavior and EM model.

Issue Observed |
Troubleshooting Steps |
|---|---|
|
Screen is blank due to low battery. |
Replace the EM31 battery with an L91 Energizer ultimate lithium battery. |
|
EM31 isn't reporting humidity. |
This is expected as the EM31 does not have a humidity sensor. |
|
No connection bars ( |
|
|
The report displays the wrong units (Celsius or Fahrenheit). |
The units displayed on the sensor are based on the locale of the dashboard to which the sensor belongs. To change the unit of measurement, update the locale of your organization. CautionWhen you update the locale of your organization, the unit of measurement will change for all devices in the Samsara dashboard. |
