From the Samsara Fleet App, you can replace a device with another of the same type, whether you're working with Vehicle Gateways (VGs), Asset Gateways (AGs), Asset Tags (ATs), or Environmental Monitor sensors (EMs). This is useful for hardware replacements, reassignments, or upgrades without having to reinstall from scratch.
This workflow supports swaps only between devices of the same type: Vehicle Gateways (VG to VG), Asset Gateways (AG to AG), Asset Tags (AT to AT), or Environmental Monitors (EM to EM), including across different models (for example, AG45 to AG52).
To use the app to swap devices, you must:

Be assigned one of the following roles:

Full or Standard Admin, either for the entire organization or with a tag-based scope

Installer role, either for the entire organization or with a tag-based scope
Note
If you're using tags, make sure the device you want to swap is assigned to a tag that you have access to.

Have the Samsara Fleet App version 2520.100 or later installed on a supported mobile or tablet device.

Before you begin this workflow, ensure the Samsara devices used in this swap are disconnected. Devices must have different serial numbers and belong to the same organization.

Use the following workflow to swap a Vehicle Gateway or Asset Gateway in the Samsara Fleet App:

In the Samsara Fleet App, tap More (
).

Tap Install Devices > Swap devices to initiate the process.

Select Vehicle Gateway or Asset Gateway.

Tap Identify gateways.

Scan or manually enter the serial number of the old gateway, then tap Done.
Tip
You can tap the flashlight icon to illuminate the serial code in low-light conditions.

Scan or manually enter the serial of the new gateway, then tap Done.

Confirm that the correct devices have been selected, then Confirm Swap.

Install the replacement gateway on the appropriate asset.

Verify install and enter the following details:

Verify install: Ensure the new gateway is plugged in. Verification may take up to 10 minutes.

Edit vehicle details or Add asset details: Add photos of your asset and view asset details.

Add installation details: Add photos to document your installation work (such as device placement or connected cables).

Tap Done to finalize the swap.
When swapping out a device that was paired with an asset, data remains continuous. The asset displays readings from the old device until the swap, then from the new device onward.
Before you begin this workflow, remove the Asset Tag you intend to replace from the asset. The old and new devices must have unique serial numbers and belong to the same organization.
Use the following workflow to swap Asset Tags:

Select Asset Tag.

Tap Identify asset tag.

Scan or manually enter the serial number of the old asset tag, then tap Done.

Install the replacement tag on the asset.
