-
Begin installation of your VG per the installation guide that corresponds with your vehicle’s VG diagnostics cable.
-
Pause the VG installation when you reach the step related to plugging in accessory devices.
-
Proceed to review the Satellite Modem Location Options.
The modem’s adapter cable is 19.7ft (6m) in length, allowing for a wide variety of mounting locations.
Proper installation of your satellite modem is essential for optimal performance. The modem requires an unobstructed view of the sky and must be installed in a secure, well-planned location. Follow these guidelines for selecting the modem’s mounting location and routing its adapter cable.
Note
Do not secure the modem to the vehicle until after the modem’s connecting cable has been routed to ensure the mounting location is appropriate for the cable’s length.
Choose a rooftop location that observes the following recommendations, then route the modem adapter cable:
-
Select a flat, ideally horizontal, position on the roof.
-
The location must have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky and minimize the length of the cable routed externally.
-
Avoid interference from metallic objects such as antennas, racks, or other roof-mounted accessories.
Proper cable routing is critical for a secure and efficient modem installation. The modem’s adapter cable must exit the vehicle and connect to the Vehicle Gateway (VG) without interference or damage. Route the cable based on one of the following methods:
-
Position the USB end of the cable near the VG but do not plug it in.
-
Route the modem connector end of the cable towards the intended panel opening, avoiding sharp edges, pinch points, airbags, and other hazards that could damage the cable.
-
Pass the cable through the panel opening using a grommet.
If no opening exists, drill one using one of the following options:
-
Bottom Mounting: To pass the cable through the panel directly below the modem, drill a 15mm (5/8”) hole directly below the modem’s mounting location. Proceed to securing the modem.
-
Samsara-Supplied Grommet: To pass the cable through a panel opening using the Samsara-supplied grommet, drill a 23mm (15/16”) hole.
-
Alternative Grommet: To pass the cable through a panel opening using a different grommet, drill a hole sized appropriately for the chosen grommet.
-
-
Route the cable along the exterior of the vehicle to the modem’s mounting location, avoiding sharp edges, pinch points, and high-wind exposure areas.
-
Secure the cable with the supplied cable ties and adhesive-backed mounts:
-
Clean the mounting surface using the supplied alcohol wipes. Ensure it is dry before applying mounts.
-
Position mounts no more than 15mm (~6”) apart. Apply pressure to each mount for at least 20 seconds to ensure good adhesion.
-
Trim any excess cable tie material after securing.
-
-
Attach the grommet securely to the panel opening to create a proper seal.
-
Proceed to Secure and Connect the Modem.
-
Position the USB end of the cable near the VG but do not plug it in.
-
Route the modem connector end of the cable towards the intended door opening, avoiding sharp edges, pinch points, airbags, and other hazards.
-
Pass the cable through the door opening and route it along the exterior of the vehicle to the modem’s mounting location.
-
Secure the cable with the supplied cable ties and adhesive-backed mounts:
-
Clean the mounting surface using the supplied alcohol wipes. Ensure it is dry before applying mounts.

-
Trim any excess cable tie material after securing.
-
-
Secure the cable in the door opening using a seal (not provided).
-
Proceed to Secure and Connect the Modem.
-
Position the USB end of the cable near the VG but do not plug it in.
-
Route the modem connector end of the cable towards the intended window opening, avoiding sharp edges, pinch points, airbags, and other hazards.
-
Pass the cable through the window opening and along the exterior of the vehicle to the modem’s mounting location.
-
Secure the cable with the supplied cable ties and adhesive-backed mounts:
-
Clean the mounting surface using the supplied alcohol wipes. Ensure it is dry before applying mounts.
-
Position mounts no more than 15mm (~6”) apart. Apply pressure to each mount for at least 20 seconds to ensure good adhesion.
-
Trim any excess cable tie material after securing.
-
-
Secure the cable in the window opening using an appropriate seal (not provided).
-

If rooftop mounting is unsuitable or performance issues arise, choose a dashboard location that observes the following recommendations:
-
Select a horizontal area on the dashboard with a clear view of the sky.
-
Ensure the location does not block vents or air bags, interfere with vehicle controls, or obstruct the driver’s view.
-
This location is suitable for most use cases and minimizes exposure to environmental factors.
Warning
Dashboard mounting in hot or sunny environments may negatively affect device longevity due to very high temperatures.
After you have chosen a suitable dashboard location, route the modem adapter cable:
-
Position the USB end of the cable near the VG but do not plug it in.
-
Ensure that sufficient length is allocated for the installation and satellite modem position.
-
Route the modem connector end of the Modem-Gateway Adapter Cable towards the intended modem mounting location, avoiding sharp edges, pinch points, airbags, and other hazards that could damage the cable.
