Service Tasks standardize recurring maintenance activities by allowing you to define reusable tasks with preset labor and parts estimates. You can create and manage tasks from the Service Tasks page, then add them to Work Orders to outline the expected work. During Work Order completion, technicians can update each task with the actual labor hours and parts used, enabling more accurate cost tracking and maintenance reporting.
Each Service Task includes identifying details, cost estimates, and optional classification codes. Use the workflow below to configure a new task and make it available for Work Orders:

In the Samsara dashboard, navigate to Maintenance (
) > Service Tasks.

Click the Add Service Task button in the top-right corner to open the task creation form.

Enter the required task information:

Name: Provide a unique name for the task.

Description: (Optional) Add details about the task.

Category: Choose a category. Tasks without a category and subcategory will appear as
Uncategorizedin reports. -
System Code / Assembly Code / Component Code (Optional): Use VMRS classifications if enabled in Settings (
) > Maintenance.

Subcategory: Select a subcategory.

Estimated Labor Hours: (Optional) Define the anticipated time to complete the task. Technicians can override this value during Work Order completion.

Estimated Parts Cost: (Optional) Enter the anticipated cost of parts required. Technicians can override this value during Work Order completion.

Click Save to add the task to your active Service Tasks list.

In the Samsara dashboard, navigate to Maintenance (
) > Service Tasks.

For the Service Task you want to modify, click the more actions ( ••• ) menu and then click Edit.

Edit: Modify the details of a service task.

Archive: Remove a task but preserve the historical data. Archived tasks can be reactivated if needed. Archiving does not affect existing Work Orders.

Delete: Permanently delete a task. Before deleting a task, ensure that all instances of the task are removed from Work Orders to avoid inconsistencies in reports.
