With standard authentication, you define a user’s identity using an email address (or a username for drivers) and a password. It ensures that only authorized users can access their assigned features or data within the system.
To set up standard authentication, you create administrative accounts in the Samsara dashboard by assigning a role and email address. After the account is created, the user receives an email invitation to set their password and complete the sign-up process. This ensures that each user has a unique login tied to their assigned permissions.
When signing in to the Samsara dashboard, the Keep me signed in option is selected by default for all organizations created in Samsara on or before June 9, 2025, and not selected by default for all organizations created in Samsara after June 9, 2025. For more information about the Keep me signed in option, see Session Management.
Samsara also supports login with Google accounts in the Samsara dashboard. To use a Google account, you must first Invite a New Administrator in the dashboard. Samsara then sends an invitation email with a link to log in. The user must click the link and choose Sign Up with Google Account. If the account was created previously but the user did not complete the sign-up process, you will need to remove and recreate the account.
The Keep me signed in option enhances security by preventing long-term sessions on shared or public devices.
If Keep me signed in is selected, by default users are subject to a max session length of 7 days for organizations created on or before June 9, 2025, and 30 days by default for all other organizations. You can configure the Maximum Session Length in (Settings ( ) > Security > Session Management). When the session expires, the user is signed out and must sign in again.
If Keep me signed in is not selected, by default users are automatically signed out after 2 hours of inactivity (lack of mouse clicks, mouse movement, or keyboard movement). You can configure the Idle Timeout length in (Settings ( ) > Security > Session Management). When there are 5 minutes remaining in the session, the user is prompted to Stay signed in if they wish to continue their session.
If the user changes the Keep me signed in checkbox state (checked or unchecked), Samsara remembers this preference across future sign ins, including across browsers and devices.
A user will be signed out of Samsara if they change their password.
If the user is part of multiple organizations and they are removed from one of these organizations, their session will remain active in other organizations and they will not be signed out. If there are different idle timeouts and maximum sessions lengths in each organization the user is part of, Samsara defers to the shortest of each for that user.
