The HD Samsara Camera Connector enables you to expand your current Samsara Dash Cam configuration to connect up to four compatible third-party cameras per vehicle to your Samsara dashboard.
For a comparison of Samsara Camera Connector features and to view the features available using the connector, see Samsara Camera Connector Feature Support by Dash Cam Model. Using the Samsara Dash Cam and Camera Connector configuration, the following detection types will include footage from third-party cameras:
Note
Policy Violation detection does not include footage from third-party cameras.

Tip
Use the following detailed workflow or the Install Guide (PDF).
Before you begin installation of the HD Samsara Camera Connector, complete the following tasks:
-
Verify that your third-party camera equipment is compatible with the Samsara Camera Connector. For compatible requirements, see Third-Party Compatible Camera Options.
-
Gather the following equipment:
Quantity
Description
1
VG54 or VG55
1
AHD1 with three cable connectors:
-
1m/3ft USB cable
-
15cm/0.5ft male GX12 cable (CAM)
-
15cm/0.5ft female GX12 cable (DISPLAY)
1
VG cable
1
Dual or front-facing Samsara Dash Cam with AI capabilities
Depending on your configuration, you may also require a GX12 extension cable (not provided).
-
-
Install your VG (see Vehicle Gateway (VG) Installation Guides by Cable)
To connect a third-party camera using the HD Samsara Camera Connector:
-
Connect the USB from the HD Camera Connector to the VG.
If the distance between the AHD1 and the VG is greater than 10ft/1m, you can order a USB extension cable (CBL-CM-B3AU) from Samsara.
-
Use the provided zip ties to securely mount the HD Camera Connector with the logo facing outward.
The installation location and style vary by vehicle depending on available space.
-
Complete the mounting:
-
Without an in-cab display: Mount the HD Camera Connector near the VG, but ensure both units have adequate ventilation to dissipate heat.
Warning
Do not stack the unit on top of the VG as that will hinder the thermal dissipation and cause the unit to overheat.
If your installation includes multiple cameras and a multiplexer, connect all cameras to the multiplexer.
-
With an in-cab display:
-
Loop the USB cable through the back of the cab.
-
If possible, mount the HD Camera Connector near the in-cab monitor to ensure the GX12 cable length is adequate to connect. No extension cables should be required.
-
-
-
Connect the camera system to the HD Camera Connector male GX12 cable.
-
Connect the HD Camera Connector female GX12 cable to the in-cab monitor video input.
-
To confirm that the cameras are positioned appropriately, first verify that the VG has power, the dash cam is recording, and the third-party cameras have power.
-
Proceed to Test Dash Cam Positioning.
Using the Samsara Fleet App you can take a picture to verify the installation of the dash cam. During the verification, you can also mirror the stream horizontally or vertically to simulate the footage administrators will see from the Samsara dashboard. This will show the potion as if you were looking into the vehicle instead of from the driver's view of the cab. The mirror stream does not impact the stream on the device; if you have an in-cab display connected, drivers will continue to view it from their point of view.
