[en] The ELD mandate requires driver approval of edits suggested by a carrier. Specifically, 49 CFR 395.30 (d) 1-2 states:
[en] "A driver must confirm or reject any proposed change... in order for any motor carrier-proposed changes to take effect."
[en] "A motor carrier may not request edits to the driver's electronic records before the records have been submitted by the driver."
[en] To comply with this regulation, Samsara allows carriers to suggest edits to a driver's log only after it has been certified.
[en] At the end of a shift, drivers certify their log from HoS > Log in the Samsara Driver App.
[en] If you need to make any corrections, you can do so from the Samsara Dashboard. Drivers can also Edit HOS Logs.
[en] From the Samsara Dashboard, select Compliance ( ) > Driver HOS.
[en] Select the name of the driver.
[en] To narrow the results, use the Search or apply Tags.
[en] Select the date range of interest.
[en] Select the date of the log you want to edit.
[en] If the driver has not yet certified his or her log, the Details column displays a Missing Driver Certification violation. Your edits queue until the driver certifies the log. As soon as a driver certifies the log, Samsara prompts the driver to review your edits. After a driver certifies the edits, the Missing Driver Certification violation clears and the log updates with the time of the driver certification.
[en] (Optional) To navigate directly to a status change in the log, click on the segment from the log chart or highlight multiple segments to edit.
[en] Click Edit (or Queue Edit for uncertified logs) to the right of any individual segment.
[en] Select a Start time and End time for the segment you want to edit. Use the left and right arrows to quickly jump to the next time segment.
[en] (Optional) Select the Status you want to apply to this time segment. If you are only editing the vehicle assignment, you can leave the status as Unchanged.
[en] Select the Vehicle assigned to the driver during this time segment. If the current vehicle assignment is correct, select Unchanged. To remove a vehicle assignment, select None.
[en] Enter a brief explanatory Remark about the edit.
[en] Select Ignore Driving Segment to recompute the driver's clock status to Off Duty, On Duty, Personal Conveyance or Sleeper Berth.
[en] See [en] Ignore a Driving Segment for more information or to enable this option.
[en] Save your edits.
[en] After Samsara saves the correction, you can toggle between Show Pending Edits and Hide Pending Edits option to compare the original log to the corrected log. The Samsara Dashboard displays pending edits in yellow until the driver reviews and accepts the changes. The Samsara Driver App displays a red banner to Review Carrier Edits on the main HOS screen as well as on any individual log where pending edits exist.
[en] The driver reviews the edits in the Samsara Driver App and either accepts or rejects the edits.
[en] If they do not view the HoS screen, the app prompts the driver before Sign Out. The log you edited opens, prompting the driver to review your changes and re-certify. The driver can switch between Edited Log and Original Log to compare your changes with the original. If more than one edit exists on the log, the driver may tap the or next to each edited segment to accept or reject that individual segment. To reject all edits, they must tap the next to each edited segment.
[en] Finally, the driver selects Certify and Submit at the bottom of the screen. If more logs exist with pending edits, the app directs the driver to the next log needing review. The driver can Skip at any time to move on to a different day or Cancel to exit this screen.
[en] If you need to update a Driving (ELD) status change due to user error, such as when a driver forgets to sign out of the ELD and a mechanic moves the vehicle, you can annotate the driver log with Ignore Driving Segment to correct HOS clocks, duration calculations, and violations.
[en] To edit a driver log with Ignore Driving Segment:
[en] You must be a full admin or have a custom role with Driver Logs - Ignore Essentials permissions.
[en] Drivers must be on Driver App version 2130.100 and above in order to see clocks and for violations to accurately reflect the new status.
[en] Ignore Driving Segment annotation displays in the Datafile and does not remove the Driving (ELD) time from the Datafile, emailed logs, or officer-facing screens.
[en] All dashboard reports and API endpoints will reflect the new duty status.
[en] To ignore a driving segment, first perform the workflow to [en] Edit a Driver Log. Return to this workflow when the procedure instructs.
[en] Enable Ignore Driving Segment and click Next.
[en] Select the correct Driving (ELD) Status.
[en] Return to [en] Edit a Driver Log workflow to complete the edit.
[en] When the driver accepts the edit, the dashboard displays the correction with an annotation:
[en] After you enable Ignore Driving Segment, and the driver accepts the edits, the Samsara Driver App annotates the shift and reflects the changes. The Samsara Driver App provides the following driver experience to review the carrier edits:
[en] From the Daily Log, the driver taps Review Carrier Edits.
[en] The driver reviews the edit and the admin remark. If the driver accepts the edit, the HOS clocks reflect the new duty status.
[en] During a Roadside Inspection, the edit displays as a remark in the driver log.
