Prevent thermal events, avoid unplanned downtime, and reduce wheel problems with SKF TraX Wheel End Monitoring System (WEM). This integration leverages data collected by SKF TraX monitoring sensors mounted at the outboard side of the trailer wheel rim, which is then transmitted through Bluetooth BLE signals detected by Samsara AG52/AG53 on trailers.
This integration provides the following features:
-
Alert drivers and fleet managers on rear thermal events
-
Help prevent the occurrence of wheel separation events
-
Detect impending bearing failure, which helps you avoid unplanned downtime
-
Reduce cost of ownership by eliminating preventative wheel bearing replacement
SKF: The Samsara partnership with SKF enables Samsara to pull data from SKF Wheel End Sensors. This feature requires the following:
-
SKF sensor
Note
During beta, Samsara can supply you with SKF sensors. Reach out to your Samsara representative for more details.
Samsara:
-
AG52 or AG53
-
A specific Samsara license is required for this integration. Contact your Samsara representative for more details.
Samsara built the SKF TraX Wheel End Monitoring integration and will assist with deployments as needed. Follow the steps below to get started. If there are any issues, please contact Samsara Support.
-
Contact your Samsara sales representative to start the enrollment process.
You can obtain SKF sensors for a trial period at no cost.
-
Enable SKF within the Samsara dashboard:
-
Set up your SKF Account:
-
Mount the sensor by viewing the Youtube video of hardware installation.
The installer attaches the sensor to the wheel end and configures it with the TraX mobile app. Ensure that the sensor is attached with arrows pointing towards the tire.
-
Activate the sensor in the SKF TraX mobile app.
You can refer to the SKF user manual or perform the following workflow:
-
Sign in to the SKF Trax app and search for the trailer by name or VIN.
You need to search with at least 4 characters.
-
Select the Vehicle Type (for example, trailer) and Axle Configuration (for example, 2 axles).
-
Tap + at the position where you want to activate a sensor.
-
Follow the on-screen instructions to active the sensor and update its firmware.
The sensor status and battery levels are visible in the SKF Trax app after they are activated.
-
-
View sensor data on the Samsara dashboard in Overview (
) > Assets:
-
Review the list of trailers with SKF sensors:
-
Configure alerts based on SKF sensor data.
You can set up a Samsara Wheel End Warning alerts to notify you or drivers of issues based on SKF alert categories such as if wheel temperature exceeds a certain level, if there's a sensor failure, and more.
There are two types of alerts Samsara recommends for monitoring SKF sensor data:
-
A Wheel End Warning alert for high temperature, which can be duration dependent.
To set a Wheel End Warning alert for high temperature, select the Provider (SKF), specify Temperature Warning as the condition, set what the minimum temperature the alert should trigger at, an optional duration after which you want to raise an alert, and alert source (All Assets or specific assets).
When selecting who to notify for this alert, Samsara recommends you include the driver of the trailer.
-
An Wheel End Warning alert for all other wheel end warnings.
To set a Wheel End Warning alert, select the Provider (SKF), specify one or more of the following wheel end faults conditions: Temperature Sensor Failure, Wheel End Sensor Failure, Extreme Low Battery, Low Battery, or Wheel End Warning, and the alert source (All Assets or specific assets).
Samsara recommends you set all above wheel end faults conditions to a duration of 0 minutes.
After you set a Wheel End Warning alert, drivers and fleet managers can be notified of wheel end events.
