We’re improving how Defensive Driving events contribute to the Safety Score to better reflect positive driving behaviors. These updates help ensure drivers receive appropriate recognition—especially when Defensive Driving actions are paired with behaviors that are typically scored negatively, like Harsh Braking.
With this change, if your team uses Needs Recognition or Recognized statuses, those events will now count toward the Safety Score. Previously, they were excluded. This change means that more Defensive Driving events will contribute to both historical and future scores, potentially leading to small score increases for some drivers.
Note
There is no option to apply this only to future scores—both historical and future scores will reflect the updated logic.
Additionally, when a Defensive Driving label is applied alongside another safety behavior (such as Harsh Braking), the negative weight of the other behavior will be removed. For example, a Harsh Brake labeled with Defensive Driving will no longer reduce the score.
While most organizations will see minimal impact due to the relatively low frequency of these events, affected drivers may notice a small increase in Safety Score.
The updates are planned to rollout to organizations in phases. About three weeks before your rollout date, a banner will display on the Safety Overview and remain for 30 days post-rollout (or until dismissed). After the behavior change is implemented, no action will be required to enable the updates.
Due to variability in configuration and usage across fleets, the impact on Safety Scores may differ. You can use the following tools to estimate how these changes might affect your organization:
-
Safety Overview Dashboard: Review the Defensive Driving event count and rate for the past 90 days.
-
Safety Inbox Filters: Filter by Event Type = Defensive Driving and Status = Needs Recognition or Recognized to spot impacted drivers.
-
Safety Score Configuration: Review current weightings for Defensive Driving and Harsh Brake events.
Score Impact Example: Suppose a driver had the following in the last 90 days:
-
Harsh Brake & Defensive Driving - Recognized
-
Harsh Brake & Defensive Driving - Reviewed
-
Defensive Driving - Needs Recognition
