Automatic coach assignments help streamline the event review process by safety events being automatically assigned to the coach responsible for that driver.
Once a coach is assigned to a driver, safety events that enter the Inbox assigned to that driver will be automatically assigned to that coach by the end of the driver’s trip. Coaches will receive automatic emails each time they are assigned to an event, even if they are assigned automatically.
Setting Up Coach Assignment
Visit Settings > Safety > Coaching page
- Select Edit assignments
- Select the driver(s) to which you’d like to assign the coach. If the customer has a tag<>coach mapping, they can also filter by tag and select all. Once all the drivers are selected for 1 coach, click “Edit Assigned Coach.”
- A modal will pop up. Select the coach to which you’d like to assign these drivers. All coaches with permission to coach the selected drivers will appear in the dropdown (requires Coaching Edit permissions).
For bulk updating, you can upload a CSV file with driver<>coach mappings. You are able to download a sample file format by clicking on “Upload CSV” and clicking “Preview.” The CSV uploader only adds/updates assignments, but it never deletes them. The uploaded file should specify a coach's name in each row. Be sure to delete rows containing drivers to which you don't want to assign coaches.
All users with permission to coach the selected set of drivers will appear in the Settings page drop-down modal for updating the permanently assigned coach. This requires Coaching Edit permissions for the set of drivers selected.
All users with 1) Coaching Edit permissions and 2) permissions on either the event’s driver or device will appear in the Coaching Assignment drop-down on the event review page.
Automatic Coach Assignment in the Safety Inbox
- Events with assigned drivers will be automatically assigned to their coach at the end of the driver's trip.
Users can still override individual coach assignments on the event review page.
Automatic coach assignments only impact events that occur going forward (it won’t retroactively change/edit coach assignments on old events)
Automatic coach assignments will be reflected in the audit log of the event. The customer can tell that it’s an automatic coach assignment when the audit log coach entry is named Samsara.

The Coach assignments by the driver can easily be seen via the Coaching page.
