How Samsara determines speed limits:
During active trips, Vehicle GPS location is uploaded to the Samsara cloud (approximately every 5 seconds).
This GPS location (latitude/longitude) is then “matched” to the closest road segment using a third party mapping tool. Samsara cloud then looks up the speed limit for that particular road segment in our Global Speed Limit Database and applies that speed limit value in various places throughout the Dashboard.
How to view speed data:
Option 1: Dash Cam Stills and Videos
The speed limit will appear as an overlay on the dash cam stills and videos. If no speed limit is displayed here, it means our Database has no speed limit value for the matching road segment.
Option 2: Vehicle Speed Graphs
The speed graphs for vehicle trips indicates sections of driving where speeding occurs (highlighted in red). More information on this process can be found in this article.
Option 3: Dashboard Alerts
Alerts can be configured based on vehicle speed exceeding the speed limit value in the Database. These alerts are sent to Fleet Managers. Follow this link to learn more about setting up speeding alerts.
Please note that if a speed limit update is made, it will not retroactively fix the displayed speed limit value.
