To quickly and easily create a large number of routes for your fleet, you can upload a comma-separated values (CSV) file. At a high-level, each row in the file represents a stop on a route, with multiple rows collectively representing an entire route. The first row for a given route represents the starting location and time.

-
Create the CSV file in the spreadsheet application of your choice. See CSV Format for Routes for detailed formatting requirements.
-
From the Samsara dashboard, select Dispatch (
) > Routes.
-
Select More Actions > Upload CSV.
-
Click the link to Upload a file or drag and drop it to the dialog.
-
Click Upload to initiate the file upload.
To upload routes in bulk, you must create a CSV file that adheres to the following guidelines:
-
The file can contain up to 1,000 rows of data.
-
Samsara recommends using a spreadsheet application to edit your CSV file. If you use a text editor, you must format any entries that contain commas, for example a full address, in quotes.
-
You can view two example templates. The first template represents creating routes using the Address Book. The second template represents creating routes using raw addresses (Latitude, Longitude, Full Address). It is also possible to mix and match these two methods in one file (with some rows using the Address Book and other rows using raw addresses).
-
The file must specify real driver usernames in the
Assigned Driver Username
field. If the usernames do not match those specified in Samsara, the upload will fail. Alternatively, you can delete the driver usernames in that column and create the routes as unassigned.
The following table describes the CSV fields you can use to define routes:
Field |
Description |
Example |
---|---|---|
Route Name |
Descriptive name to identify the route. |
Ice Cream Deliveries |
Assigned Driver Username |
(Optional) Must be blank if Assigned Vehicle Name is completed. Specify the driver to which you want to assign the route. To assign a driver, the driver username must already be defined in Samsara. Otherwise, you can leave this field blank to instead supply an Assigned Vehicle Name. If neither a driver nor vehicle are specified, Samsara imports the route as unassigned. |
driver_a |
Assigned Vehicle Name |
(Optional) Must be blank if Assigned Driver Username is completed. Specify the vehicle to which you want to assign the route. To assign a vehicle, the vehicle name must already be defined in Samsara. Otherwise, you can leave this field blank to instead supply an Assigned Driver Username. If neither a driver nor vehicle are specified, Samsara imports the route as unassigned. |
Semi1 |
Stop Name |
Descriptive name to identify the stop. This field must be completed for each location within the route, including the start location. |
Bi-rite |
Stop Arrival Time |
Optional for the start location if Stop Departure Time is complete. This field must be completed for all other stops. For the first row of a route, this field represents the scheduled arrival time for the start location. All date/time values in a single CSV file must be in the same format and are based off the timezone set in general settings. |
|
Stop Departure Time |
Required only for the start location if the Stop Arrival Time is blank. For the first row of a route, this field represents scheduled departure time or planned time for driver to leave the start location. This field is optional for all other stops. All date and time values in a single CSV file must be in the same format and are based off the timezone set in general settings. |
|
Stop Notes |
(Optional) Identifies any notes you want to include about the stop. Notes added to route stops are visible to drivers in the Samsara Driver App under the respective stop. The route view for fleet administrators does not include the driver notes. |
Deliver 5 cases |
Address Name |
(Optional) This field can be blank. If completed, this route stop will be created using the geofence of the Address Book entry with the same name. If not using an Address Book entry with the Address Name field, both Latitude, Longitude and Full Address are required for successful upload. |
Bi-Rite |
Latitude |
Required if Address Name is not completed. The Latitude, Longitude, and Full Address fields can be used to create a route stop without relying on an Address Book entry. |
36.24491 |
Longitude |
This field can be blank but is required if no Address Name is provided. The Latitude, Longitude, and Full Address fields can be used to create a route stop without relying on an Address Book entry. |
-79.98793 |
Full Address |
This field can be blank but is required if no Address Name is provided. The Latitude, Longitude, and Full Address fields can be used to create a route stop without relying on an Address Book entry. |
