Fleet Admins can send direct messages to drivers from their Samsara Dashboard in the Messages section of the Samsara Dashboard.
Sending Messages from the Dashboard
To access open an existing conversation, select an existing message channel to continue chatting to that recipient.
In order to compose a new message, select the Compose message button and select all drivers, a list of drivers, or tags as the audience for your message in the pop up.
Receiving Messages on the Dashboard
Message notifications will show up as a counter next to the Messages button. All current conversations should be available in this messages section and flagged in your conversations.
Receiving Messages as a Driver
On the Samsara Driver App, drivers can access current and previous messages in their Messages section (Envelope in the top left). When a new message is received, the envelope will display a red indicator until the message receives a reply.
Drivers are prevented from accessing their messages while in a Driving status and will receive a pop-up warning when attempting to access Messages while driving.
Drivers can also enable and disable push notifications from the Notifications menu on the Settings page so it's even easier to stay in touch with Dispatch even when the app is minimized.
Text to Speech: Play Incoming Messages While Driving
To enable this feature, go to Settings. Under the Driver App section on the left of the screen, click on Notifications. The second option titled “Text to Speech” must be toggled to on to enable this feature for all drivers. In order to toggle “Text to Speech”, “New messages” must be toggled on first.
This feature is only suited for messages sent in English and is only available in the US, and Canada. We are working towards releasing this for the UK next.
- The Samsara Driver app must be on app version 1.3.4 or later which can be downloaded or updated from the iOS App Store or the Android Google Play Store.
- Ensure that devices are not on silent in order for drivers to hear the audio of message played out loud.
With this option toggled on, drivers will now have the option to Play incoming messages while they are driving. If there are several messages unread, the driver will be able to Play them sequentially or Dismiss all of them at once.
