REQUIRED PERMISSIONS: Full or standard admin role, or have a custom role with Account management view and edit permissions in License Assignment.
Your organization purchases licenses to access various Samsara features, products, and services. For example, to access Samsara software your organization requires Software Licenses, or to use any Samsara hardware requires specific Device and License Purchase Types.
License Management is where you assign your Samsara licenses to the appropriate corresponding entities, such as drivers, devices, or users. License assignment provides entities access to gated functionalities, visibility into how your licenses are allocated across your organization, and helps you further manage billing.
For most hardware types. Samsara performs automated license-to-entity assignment when devices are activated. There are some cases in which licenses need to be manually assigned through License Management. Some of these scenarios include:

Some software licenses require manual assignment, such as a Forms license.

A vehicle has been sold by your organization and you need to re-purpose the license assigned to this vehicle to a different vehicle in your fleet.

If licenses and compatible hardware entities are purchased in the same order, automatic license assignment reserves those licenses for those devices in the order. You can manually assign re-assign those licenses to other active, compatible devices.
To manually assign a license to an entity, perform the following workflow:

Select the Settings icon (
) at the bottom of your Fleet menu to view dashboard settings.

Select Organization > License Management.

Under the Unassigned tab, choose the license type you want to assign.

Assign the license to the individual entity, or if you want to assign a license in bulk:

Confirm the license assignment.

You can view all assigned licenses in the Assigned tab.
You can assign hardware licenses to specific assets in bulk through CSV.
To add hardware licenses in bulk through CSV:

Follow the workflow on how to download your gateways list and edit gateways in bulk in Edit Gateways in Bulk.

In the Licenses field of the CSV, enter the hardware license number to assign the license to the device.
Separate multiple hardware licenses with a semicolon. For example:
LIC-VG-ENT;LIC-CM1-ENT.
If you need to remove a license assignment from an entity, such as when you sell an asset and need to remove a license that was previous associated with it, you can unassign a license from the Assigned tab.
To unassign a license, perform the following workflow:
