Q: What does a license include?
A: Licenses are part of your Samsara subscription and include access to the Samsara software and ongoing aspects of the Samsara service, such as 24/7 technical support, cellular data connectivity (for devices with cellular capabilities), cloud-hosted software (Samsara dashboard) historical data storage, firmware upgrades, and ongoing software feature releases and bug fixes.
Q: Does Samsara charge per-feature or per-user fees?
A: No. Licenses are simple, transparent, and all-inclusive, without hidden fees.
Q: How are licenses sold?
A: Samsara licenses are sold on a “per device, per year” basis. Each customer organization is licensed for a certain number of devices through a termination date.
Q: Which Samsara products require licenses?
Licenses are required for the following gateways and sensors:
- VG-series Vehicle Gateways
- CM-series cameras (CM31, CM32, etc.)
- EM-series environmental monitors (EM21, EM22)

A: No. Licenses are only required for gateways and sensors. Licenses are not required for accessories (such as Driver ID tokens), cable harnesses, or current transformers.
Q: Do I need a license for every Samsara gateway and sensor?
A: Yes. Every Samsara gateway and sensor needs a license to function. The number of devices of a given product family cannot you have exceed the number of your licenses (e.g. if you have 100 VG licenses, you can have up to 100 VG-series gateway devices in your organization.)
Q: Will Samsara gateways and sensors work without a license?
A: No. If you do not have a license, or if the license expires, your gateways and sensors will not function.
Q: Do I need a license to use the Samsara Driver App?
A: No, the Driver App does not require its own license, but functionality may be limited unless you have a vehicle with a licensed VG-series gateway. There is no limit to the number of Driver App accounts in an organization, and you can install the Driver App on any number of mobile devices. To use the app, a driver must be in a vehicle with a VG-series gateway installed, and the gateway must have a valid license.
Q: Do I need to buy an additional license whenever I buy additional hardware?
A: Usually. Whenever you increase the number of devices in your organization, you must purchase additional licenses. If you are purchasing a replacement hardware device (e.g. because the original was lost or damaged, or you wish to upgrade to a newer model), you can use the new replacement device with your previously purchased license. The device being replaced will be deactivated.
Q: I submitted an RMA request. Do I need to do anything regarding licenses?
A: No, you do not need to worry about licenses. The replacement unit will work with your original license.
Q: What happens if I add new devices and licenses to an existing deployment?
A: If you make multiple purchases, you may have multiple license expiration dates. If you allow a portion of your licenses to expire without purchasing a renewal, you must remove the corresponding number of devices from your organization such that the total number of devices you have is no larger than the number of your valid licenses.
Q: When does a license term begin?
A: License terms begin on the date of hardware shipment (not date that hardware devices are activated).
Q: What happens after my license term expires?
A: If you wish to continue using the service, you can purchase a new license which will work with your existing hardware.
Q: Are licenses transferable?
