Vehicle Gateways (VG) have a Vehicle Battery Conservation Mode to save energy and extend battery life. By default, Samsara's Vehicle Gateways use a small amount of power when idle.
Vehicle Battery Conservation Mode further reduces use of the vehicle's battery when the vehicle is not in use. This feature is intended for vehicles that are subject to quick battery drain under default settings.
Battery Conservation Mode can be enabled by the following steps: Settings > General > Vehicle Battery Conservation Mode
You will know if a VG is in low power mode if the LED on the VG is blinking green.
What happens during Vehicle Battery Conservation Mode?
When a VG is in Vehicle Battery Conservation Mode, features such as WiFi hotspot connectivity and camera video retrieval will not be available.
If your vehicle is turned off and the VG doesn't detect movement for one hour, the VG will go into Sleep Mode. During Sleep Mode it will intermittently stream location and sensor data to the Samsara Cloud.
The VG awakens when it detects motion (given that there is power to the gateway). When the vehicle’s engine turns on, a device connects to the built-in WiFi Hotspot, or the VG is sent a software upgrade.
