Introduction to industrial sensors

There are many different types of industrial sensors, measuring a huge variety of different parameters.  They are used to monitor industrial processes, ensure safety or weigh products.

Some examples of common sensors:

  • Pressure transducers
  • Temperature sensors
  • Humidity sensors
  • Gas detectors
  • Moisture detectors
  • Current transformers
  • Accelerometers
  • Flow meters
  • Liquid level sensors

Sensors in industrial environments may take the form of standalone meters, like those with a sweeping hand indicating the current value, or digital meters with a liquid crystal display.

Sensors may also be part of closed loop automation systems, such as a pressure sensor being used to trigger a valve opening.  These sensors transmit data to another system to log, analyze or trigger other actions, and a commonly called transmitters.
